Here’s some video from Glenn Beck’s restore honor to America rally from last weekend. It’s long and and in some parts, I’d call it laughable. But aside from the few yuck-yucks I got out of it, mostly I saw a slew of scared, ill-informed people.
They are scared fro the same reasons people of all political bents are; the country is changing fast enough to make our collective heads spin. America doesn’t sit so comfortably atop the perch it once did and people are frightened, with good reason, about their future.
Fear is exacerbated but ignorance. Ignorance to the rest of the world, to what is happening behind the closed door of government. No one really knows what is happening or what might happen in the years to come. I’m not saying tea baggers or tea party people, or whatever we are calling them are dumb. They’re just as uninformed as the rest of us. But when you come home from work—having spent the day doing your damnedest at a job that probably makes you miserable and fearing that any day now the job you hate but depend on, lest your family starve, might be swept out from beneath you—to watch the news spew all kinds of sensational, fear mongering bullshit, it isn’t hard to see why so many people are latching on to what they see as a way of holding on to what little they have left. It’s us versus them, whoever “them” may be, where ever “they” are.
It would be too easy to sit on the left-wing, west coast, can’t-we-all-just-love-each other seat of my pants and make fun of the people in this video. Though I might think their reactions are misguided, misplaced or just plain wrong, the fact is they are scared. I’m scared too. I’m educated, in debt and have no real world job skills to speak of.
We are all scared and there are no easy answers.
